Compare and Contrast Blogs and Wikis

You may add images and other HTML code if you wish

Blogs and Wikis are both collaborative Web 2.0 technologies, but have many differences.  One of these differences are the number of authors. A Wiki is a new form of user participation and collaboration which allows for a collective authoring and produces information by harnessing the collective intelligence of the users. The authors of a Wiki can edit and make changes to the same page. While blogs are basically considered an online diary or a journal, it consists of posts and/or articles in reverse chronological order which consists of only one author.  The author of a blog makes a post, then others can leave comments on the post. Both bring information someway to the reader but the have their own separate way of getting to the reader.

I agree with Desiree as these are both useful collaborative Web 2.0 applications. Blogs seem to be most useful in getting your information out there to the public. I see a lot of blogs out there with nothing commented on it which leads me to believe that it's not being accessed by anyone or that it is a read only blog. Are they going to the wayside or are the becoming obsolete. I can't really tell. I like the fact though, that anyone can speak their mind on information as they see fit, with or without criticism.

The wiki, I like because I can see how useful it can be when working on certain projects. It seems a little tedious when trying to access your document, but overall your fellow collaborators can work closely together without having to attach, download and send your documents. This would come in especially handy when working with deadlines.

I also liked this article on the fear of using Wikis.  It addressed some of the concerns I had with making it a worthwhile tool in business.

Don't Fear the Wiki! Business Can Benefit

As has been previously stated, blogs and wikis being web 2.0 technologies are both useful in their own way. reading through a poster above had stated that blogs sit unread, I may have a solution to that problem, Blogs these days are for lack of a better term, a Dime a Dozen, there are more blogs than people reasonably know what to do with. A google search will yield several blogs with plenty of valid information all about the same topic. When you have that many blogs on one topic not every blog will be visited. While on the other side if you have one wiki on a topic and people can contribute it will add to the wiki making it grow and have an abundance of information all available in one place rather than spread out across 4 or more Blogs.

Blogs and Wikis - Both have their place

To me the blog and the wiki are two very different tools.  To put it in perspective, I like to think of the situations where I need a blog vs wiki.  If I want to look up something factual, I would use a wiki.  If I wanted to know what Matt Cutts latest position was on SEO, I would look up his blog.  Both the blog and the wiki offer great information, in different forms.   -James Douglas
