Lecture Overview

The Web has grown from a collection of static, read-only pages, to a way that people communicate and interact. This growth has been made possible by the development of many technologies over the last 10 years. These technologies brought about changes in the behavior of the Web page.

In this class, we will took at how the Web page has changed from a technical point of view and discuss some of the concepts and technologies that paved the way for Web 2.0.

Note: This is not a programming class, so you are not responsible for the technical part of this lecture. I am merely giving you an overview to familiarize you with some terminology that relates to the subject.

Web 2.0 applications that use XML: Web Services and Web Feeds

Note: Web feeds will be covered in more detail later in this course

XML provides a format which can be used to communicate and exchange data between platforms and languages. It is also used to create other XML languages that are widely used with Web Services.

Amazon has been a pioneer in the area of Web Services to allow not only developers, but also individuals to use their data to build upon and share with others. This video gives a nice overview:

Web 2.0 = RIA + SOA + End User

 - Rich Internet Applications (RIA) - bring the experience of the desktop to the Web

 - Service Oriented Architecture (SOA)  - how applications can expose their functionality so that other applications can use and share with them

 - End User - the user is a participant and a part of the application

Mash-ups = New Breed of Web Applications

Mash-ups are the combination of data or functionality from one website with that of another website to provide a richer application. Mash-ups use APIs (application programming interface).

Here are some interesting mash-ups:

Cloud Computing - refers to the new breed of applications that are run on the Web and to the sharing of resources on the Web.

The philosophy of Web 2.0

The sharing of information, user contribution and the combining of resources, are characteristic of the Web 2.0 applications. This has lead to the development of the many tools and applications that run on the Internet or "in the cloud" . Thus the term "the Web as the platform".

There is an assignment to accompany this class.
